Best Air Purifiers for Cat Litter Smell (2026)

The best air purifier for cat litter smell is the Winix 5530. Its granular carbon panel gives litter-box gases far more to cling to than the thin carbon sheets in most purifiers, and at $180–$220 it costs a fraction of the units with more. For a box that lives in a living room, the Blueair Blue Signature Large adds pelleted carbon and nearly twice the airflow, for about twice the price.

Two honest points before the picks. A box scooped every day, filled with a good clumping litter, does more for the smell than any machine; the purifier only handles what's left over. And if your problem is sneezing or itchy eyes rather than odor, you want our best air purifiers for cats page, which is built around dander and allergen. This one is about the smell.

Room sizes follow the site rule of smoke CADR × 1.55, close to 4.8 air changes an hour at standard ceiling height. The Vital 200S-P's filter cost assumes the $59.99 Toxin Absorber changed every 6–12 months.

Why litter smell beats most purifiers

  • The smell is a gas, so HEPA ignores it. Ammonia from urine and the sulfur notes from waste pass through a HEPA filter untouched. HEPA still earns its place by trapping litter dust, but the smell needs carbon.
  • Ammonia is hard for plain carbon to hold. It's a small, light molecule, so ordinary activated carbon saturates on it sooner than on cooking or smoke odors. The more carbon a unit carries, the longer it keeps up between changes.
  • Particle sensors can't smell the box. The Mighty2, Vital 200S-P and Blue Signature Large steer auto mode with particle sensors. A room can reek of ammonia while the sensor reads clean and the fan idles, so run a fixed speed or a schedule near the box.
  • Placement beats horsepower. A modest unit a few feet from the box does more than a big one across the house.

Best overall for litter-box odor: Winix 5530

Mid-range · 253 CFM CADR · 392 sq ft

The Winix 5530 wins because of what's inside Filter Q: a dedicated AOC carbon panel packed with granular pellets, about 226 g according to CleanAirAdviser, sitting between the pre-filter and the True HEPA panel. Loose granules give ammonia and waste odors far more surface to land on than a carbon-sprayed wrap, and that's the difference between a smell that fades and one that hangs around.

Its AHAM-verified 253 CFM covers about 392 sq ft, more than a laundry room, mudroom or spare bathroom needs, so it can run on a low, steady setting. The washable fine-mesh pre-filter catches cat hair and tracked litter dust before they reach the HEPA; Winix's manual says to rinse it every 14 days, which suits a spot beside a litter box.

Filter Q lists at $79.99 and is rated for a year, and its carbon can't be rinsed and reused, so a busy box means buying it on schedule. PlasmaWave, the Winix ionizer, can be turned off; our guide to leaving PlasmaWave on or off covers the trade-offs for pet homes.

Best for a litter box in the living room: Blueair Blue Signature Large

Blueair Blue Signature Large air purifier

Premium · 455 CFM CADR · 705 sq ft

Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure

Some homes have nowhere to hide the box but a corner of the main room. The Blueair Blue Signature Large suits that spot because its filter holds pelleted activated carbon, which HouseFresh judged much better than the carbon-impregnated fabric in other Blueair models, and because 455 CFM covers about 705 sq ft of open living space. Blueair markets the filter as OdorFence and claims ten times the odor removal; that's the maker's figure, not an independent one.

It's built to look like furniture, with a flat top that works as a side table and a side-facing air outlet. A cat that claims the top as a perch won't block the exhaust. HouseFresh measured 6.63 W and 40 dBA on speed 2, a sensible always-on setting for a lounge, and its laser sensor needs no routine cleaning.

The costs are real. It sells for $340–$450 against a $449.99 list, the $99.99 filter lasts 9–12 months, and the optional legs or base cost extra. Its HEPASilent charging stage can't be switched off, though HouseFresh reports an AHAM-certified ozone output of 3 ppb.

Best for a box in a bedroom: Coway Airmega Mighty2

Coway Airmega Mighty2 AP-1512N air purifier

Mid-range · 240 CFM CADR · 372 sq ft

Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure

When the litter box shares a bedroom with you, noise matters as much as carbon. The Coway Airmega Mighty2 is rated as low as 19 dB, has no ionizer, and its single Max2 filter holds about 45% more carbon than the original Mighty's, by Coway's account. Its 240 CFM suits rooms up to about 372 sq ft.

The side slide-out pre-filter makes clearing litter dust a quick job without moving the 15.2 lb body. The light sensor switches Smart mode to Sleep after about three minutes of darkness, but remember that its laser sensor reads particles, not ammonia, so on a bad night a fixed low speed beats auto.

The $69.99 filter is rated for up to 12 months; near a box, plan on replacing it when the smell returns, which may be sooner. HEPA and carbon share one cartridge, so a spent carbon layer takes the HEPA with it. Expect to pay $230–$270.

Best on a tight budget: Levoit Vital 200S-P

Levoit Vital 200S-P air purifier

Mid-range · 250 CFM CADR · 388 sq ft

Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure

The Levoit Vital 200S-P costs about $130–$180 and brings 250 CFM, about 388 sq ft of coverage, plus a rinse-off pre-filter that handles both hair and litter dust. Its standard $49.99 filter bonds the carbon to the HEPA as a thin layer, which isn't enough for a litter box on its own.

The fix is Levoit's filter range. The green Toxin Absorber (LRF-V201-GUS, $59.99 at Levoit) is the carbon-focused version and the logical pick for litter odor. The yellow Pet Allergy filter, about $59.99 on Amazon, is aimed at pet homes in general. We found no published carbon weight for either, so treat them as upgrades over the standard filter rather than a match for the Winix's granular bed. Our Vital 200S-P vs Winix 5530 comparison lays out that trade-off in full.

At a 6–12 month change interval, the Toxin Absorber costs about $60–$120 a year. Pet Mode cycles 15 minutes on speed 3 with an hour on speed 2, a useful rhythm near a box.

Best for several cats: AirDoctor AD5500i

AirDoctor AD5500i air purifier

Premium · 556 CFM CADR · 862 sq ft

Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure

Three or four cats sharing several boxes create a constant ammonia load that thin carbon can't keep up with. The AirDoctor AD5500i carries a dual carbon and VOC stage alongside an UltraHEPA filter, and its 556 CFM covers about 862 sq ft, so one unit can serve an open area where the boxes are spread out.

It costs around $999 before frequent discounts, filters run about $355 a year, and it draws 110 W at full speed. Try a Winix 5530 near the busiest box first. If the house still smells of cats with the boxes kept clean, the AirDoctor is the step up.

How to choose, and what to fix first

Start with the box, not the purifier. Scoop at least once a day, do a full litter change and wash the tray with unscented soap on a regular schedule, and use a clumping litter so urine leaves with the clumps. Plenty of vets suggest one box per cat plus one; an overloaded box smells no matter what's running nearby.

Then match the carbon to the load. One cat and a box in a small room: the Vital 200S-P with a Toxin Absorber filter, or the Mighty2 if it's your bedroom. A box in a shared living space or two cats: the Winix 5530, or the Blue Signature Large if it has to look good. Several cats: the AirDoctor. Our explainer on activated carbon filters shows why carbon quantity decides how long odor control lasts.

Finally, place it well. Put the purifier a few feet from the box, in the same room, with clear space on the intake side, and keep it out of any cupboard the box is tucked inside. The guide to where to place an air purifier covers clearances. Run it on a steady speed rather than auto, and swap the filter as soon as the smell starts coming back.

Frequently asked questions

Can an air purifier get rid of cat litter smell completely?

No. It can lower the background smell between cleanings, but a box that isn't scooped will produce odor faster than any home purifier can adsorb it. The order that works is a clean box first, then a purifier with real carbon a few feet away to deal with what remains.

Does a HEPA filter remove cat urine smell?

No. HEPA catches particles such as litter dust and dander, while urine odor is mostly ammonia and other gases that pass straight through it. Only activated carbon adsorbs those, which is why every pick on this page is chosen for its carbon, not its HEPA grade.

Where should I put an air purifier for a litter box?

In the same room as the box, a few feet away, with open space around the intake. Right beside the box it can pull litter dust into the pre-filter and may put a nervous cat off using it; shut in a cupboard with the box, it just recirculates the same stale pocket of air.

Is an air purifier with an ionizer safe around cats?

The Coway Airmega Mighty2 and the Levoit Vital 200S-P have no ionizer. The Winix 5530's PlasmaWave can be switched off. The Blueair Blue Signature Large's charging stage can't be turned off; HouseFresh reports an AHAM-certified ozone output of 3 ppb, under the 5 ppb UL 2998 limit. If you'd rather avoid the question, choose a unit without one.

How often should I change the filter with a litter box nearby?

When the smell comes back, which is often sooner than the rated life. Ammonia fills carbon faster than everyday household odors, so a filter rated for 12 months may be spent in six to nine near a busy box. Write down the date you swap it, so you learn how long it really lasts in your home.
