The best air purifier for a 500 sq ft room is the Levoit Core 600S. A room that size needs about 323 CFM of smoke CADR, and the Core 600S delivers 391 CFM for $280–$320, with filters at about $60 a year. The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max adds more headroom for a similar sale price, and the Coway Airmega 350 is the no-app, no-ionizer alternative. Several popular models, including the Coway Airmega 400, only scrape past the line.
The math: why 500 sq ft needs about 323 CFM
Our site-wide sizing rule is smoke CADR × 1.55 = room size in square feet. Run it backward for 500 sq ft:
- 500 ÷ 1.55 = 322.6, so you need about 323 CFM of smoke CADR.
- Check it with air changes. A 500 sq ft room under an 8 ft ceiling holds 4,000 cubic feet. 323 CFM × 60 minutes = 19,380 cubic feet an hour, which divided by 4,000 is 4.8 air changes an hour.
- Taller ceilings raise the target. At 9 ft the room holds 4,500 cubic feet, so the same 4.8 changes need about 360 CFM; at 10 ft, about 400 CFM.
Smoke is the hardest of the three CADR tests, so sizing on it covers dust and pollen too. A 20 × 25 ft living room, an 18 × 28 ft open kitchen and lounge, or a big basement rec room all land near 500 sq ft. The room size calculator handles other ceiling heights.

Air changes assume an 8 ft ceiling: CADR × 60 ÷ 4,000 cubic feet. Prices are typical October 2026 street ranges, not live quotes.
Just below the line: the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max (283 CFM) falls 40 CFM short, and the Winix 5530 and Levoit Vital 200S-P (253 and 250 CFM) cover about 390 sq ft. They'll freshen a 500 sq ft room but won't reach the target.
Best overall for 500 sq ft: Levoit Core 600S

Mid-range · 391 CFM CADR · 606 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
The Levoit Core 600S clears the 323 CFM target by 68 CFM, or about 21%. That margin is what you want: auto mode can settle on a middle speed and still keep a 500 sq ft room near five air changes an hour, instead of parking on high. It lists 26 dB at the bottom and 55 dB at the top.
It's also the cheapest unit on the table to own. The purchase plus three years of filters at about $60 a year comes to $460–$500. With a 49 W maximum, even nonstop top-speed running would cost about $73 a year at $0.17/kWh. The app, schedules and sensor-driven auto mode are included, and there's no ionizer. Our Airmega 400 vs Core 600S comparison sets it against the Coway many readers start with.
Most headroom for the money: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Mid-range · 435 CFM CADR · 674 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
The Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max gives a 500 sq ft room about 6.5 air changes an hour, 35% over the target, for $230–$350. That extra headroom is useful in a room with a cooktop or a smoker in the household, where a lower-rated unit would sit on its top speed. Its top-speed draw of 46 W is the lowest on this page.
The costs sit elsewhere. A $69.99 filter every six to nine months runs $93–$140 a year, so three years cost about $510–$770 depending on purchase price and how fast the filter clogs. HEPASilent adds an electrostatic charging stage that stays on permanently. For a buyer who wants headroom and no charged-particle stage, the Coway Airmega 450 delivers almost the same 439 CFM at $350–$500.
Best Coway for 500 sq ft: Coway Airmega 350

Mid-range · 352 CFM CADR · 546 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
The Coway Airmega 350 is the closest fit on this list at a fair price: 352 CFM, or about 546 sq ft, which gives a 500 sq ft room 5.3 air changes an hour. Owners report sales near $239 against a $339 list, and the single cartridge costs $79 in the Fresh Starter+ version or up to $89 for Allergen+ and Intense Smoke+.
It suits buyers who don't want another app: control is on the unit, with a hidden three-level sensor-sensitivity setting and lighting that can go fully dark. Coway lists 21.5–54.7 dB, and it has no ionizer. Three years with filters land around $480–$610. Its 29 CFM margin is thinner than the Levoit's, so in a room with a 9 ft ceiling (target about 360 CFM) it falls a little short.
Only just big enough: Coway Airmega 400

Premium · 328 CFM CADR · 508 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
The Coway Airmega 400 is a reader favorite, and its spec sheet shows why: dual-sided filtration, a 22 dB floor and a live pollution readout. But its 328 CFM smoke CADR clears the 500 sq ft target by just 5 CFM. Coway's own figure is 1,560 sq ft, quoted at two air changes an hour.
In practice that thin margin means the 400 has to run on its higher speeds to keep a 500 sq ft room at target, and the top speed is listed at 52 dB. Two filters, one per side, cost $129 a year at Coway, so three years come to roughly $790–$840 at a $400–$450 street price. It makes most sense for a room nearer 400 sq ft, where its margin grows and its quiet low end matters. For a full 500 sq ft, the Airmega 350 gives more airflow for less.
Best for odors with room to spare: AirDoctor AD5500i

Premium · 556 CFM CADR · 862 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
The AirDoctor AD5500i is far more than a 500 sq ft room needs, and that's the point. At 556 CFM it can give the room more than eight air changes an hour on top speed, and it needs only about 58% of that airflow to hit the 323 CFM target, so it can sit on a lower, quieter speed. AirDoctor lists 30–50 dB, though Modern Castle measured 66.9 dB at full speed. Behind the UltraHEPA filter sits a Carbon/VOC stage aimed at cooking smells, smoke odor and chemical fumes.
It costs $999 at AirDoctor (often on sale), and the one-year filter combo pack is $354.99, so three years total about $2,060 before electricity, and its 110 W maximum is the highest here. It also has an optional ionizer on its own button; AirDoctor says it's off by default, and Modern Castle measured 0.0 ppm of ozone. Our AD5500i vs Core 600S comparison lays out what the extra money buys.
How to pick for a 500 sq ft room
Start with the ceiling. Under 8 ft, everything in the table qualifies; at 9 ft, the Airmega 400 and Airmega 350 fall short, and the Core 600S becomes the smallest unit that holds the 360 CFM target. The air changes calculator checks any unit against your exact room.
Next, think about noise. A unit with 20–35% headroom can reach five air changes on a middle speed, and middle speeds are where these machines are quiet enough to talk over. The Core 600S and 211i Max fit that profile; the Airmega 400 doesn't.
Then add up three years. The Core 600S is the cheapest full-size option at about $460–$500, the Airmega 350 follows at $480–$610, and the 211i Max ranges widely with filter life. If the whole budget is closer to $300, our best air purifiers under $300 list covers what that buys, including smaller units for rooms that turn out to be under 400 sq ft once measured.
Frequently asked questions
What CADR do I need for a 500 sq ft room?
About 323 CFM of smoke CADR under an 8 ft ceiling, which gives close to five air changes an hour. With 9 ft ceilings, aim for about 360 CFM, and with 10 ft ceilings about 400 CFM, because the room holds more air.
Can a purifier labeled for 1,500 sq ft clean a 500 sq ft room?
Only if its CADR backs it up. Big coverage figures on the box are usually quoted at one or two air changes an hour. The Coway Airmega 400, for example, is listed by Coway for 1,560 sq ft at 2 ACH, yet its 328 CFM only just clears the 323 CFM a 500 sq ft room needs at about 4.8 ACH.
Is the Coway Airmega 400 big enough for 500 sq ft?
Just. Its 328 CFM smoke CADR works out to about 508 sq ft, only 5 CFM above the target, so it has to spend more time on its higher speeds than a unit with headroom. For a 500 sq ft room you sit in at night, the Levoit Core 600S (391 CFM) or Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max (435 CFM) can do the same job on a lower speed.
Would two small air purifiers work instead of one for 500 sq ft?
Yes, if their CADRs add up to about 323 CFM and the room has two distinct zones. Two Coway Mighty units (233 CFM each) give 466 CFM. In one open square room, a single bigger unit is usually cheaper and simpler to maintain.
Does the AirDoctor AD5500i have an ionizer?
Yes. AirDoctor builds an optional ionizer into its purifiers, controlled by its own button, and says it is off by default and isn't needed for the filters to work. Modern Castle measured 0.0 ppm of ozone from the AD5500i.
