Quick verdict
Buy the Vital 200S-P if a dog or cat sheds in a 250 to 390 sq ft room: it has more AHAM-rated airflow than the Core 400S-P, and the rinse-off pre-filter takes hair off the main filter. If the room is a small bedroom without pets, the cheaper Levoit Core 300S is enough; for an open-plan space past about 400 sq ft, step up to the Levoit Core 600S.
Ideal for
- Pet owners with living rooms or large bedrooms up to ~388 sq ft
- Homes where fur clogs pre-filters (separate, washable pre-filter)
- Buyers who want app scheduling and a display that can switch itself off in a dark room (Light Detection, enabled in the VeSync app)
- Shoppers choosing between the Core 400S-P and Vital 200S-P on airflow per dollar
Not ideal for
- Bedrooms under ~220 sq ft without pets (the Core 300S costs less to buy and run)
- Open-plan rooms over ~400 sq ft
- Heavy smoke-odor or VOC problems (thin bonded carbon layer)
The full picture
The Vital 200S-P is Levoit's rectangular mid-size purifier: an AHAM Verifide smoke CADR of 250 CFM (254 dust, 289 pollen), a separate washable pre-filter in front of a bonded HEPA-grade and carbon main filter, a Pet Mode that cycles between the second and third fan speeds, an AirSight infrared particle sensor for Auto mode, and VeSync app control. It shares the LAP-V201S model code and the Vital 200S-RF filter family with the plain Vital 200S, so the '-P' marks the current, AHAM-verified listing rather than different hardware. Against the Core 400S-P it offers slightly more airflow and a pre-filter you can rinse.

The in-depth review
The Levoit Vital 200S-P is the Levoit to buy for a pet household with a living room or large bedroom up to about 388 sq ft. On paper it out-delivers the Levoit Core 400S-P (250 vs 231 CFM AHAM smoke CADR), and its pre-filter comes off and goes under the tap, which matters most when a dog or cat sheds. The catch is the main filter: HEPA-grade media and carbon are bonded into one $49.99 block, and pet homes will likely need it well before the roughly 12 months Levoit's manual allows (the filter listing hedges at 6–12).
Is the Vital 200S-P different from the plain Vital 200S?
Not in any way Levoit documents. Both carry the LAP-V201S model code (the 200S-P manual lists LAP-V201S-WUS and LAP-V201S-KUS, white and black), both take the same Vital 200S-RF filter family, and the original Vital 200S manual already describes the washable pre-filter and Pet Mode. Many buyers assume the "P" means a pet edition with extra hardware. It doesn't.
What changed is the paperwork. The older Vital 200S manual printed a single 245 CFM CADR, a 24–54 dB noise range and 51 W. Current Vital 200S-P listings carry AHAM Verifide figures of 250 CFM smoke, 254 dust and 289 pollen and a 23–54 dB range, while the 2024 Vital 200S-P manual keeps the 51 W rating and the same 13.2 lb weight. The same "-P" suffix appears across Levoit's current range (Core 400S-P, Core 600S-P) alongside AHAM-verified ratings, so read it as a sign of the current listing, not a different machine.
The practical upshot: if a retailer has the plain Vital 200S cheaper, buy it, confirm LAP-V201S on the box, and use exactly the same filters.
How it compares with the Core 300S and Core 400S-P
| Levoit Core 300S | Levoit Core 400S-P | Levoit Vital 200S-P | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoke CADR | 141 CFM | 231 CFM | 250 CFM |
| Room at 4.8 ACH | ~219 sq ft | ~358 sq ft | ~388 sq ft |
| Rated power | 24 W | 38 W | 51 W |
| Pre-filter | Part of the filter | Bonded to the filter cylinder | Separate, washable |
| Shape | Round, 360° intake | Round, 360° intake | Rectangular, 15.6 × 8.5 in base |
The Levoit Core 300S is a different class: at 141 CFM it suits a 12 × 18 ft bedroom, not a living room. The real rival is the Core 400S-P, and on airflow the two are close. HouseFresh's independent testing estimated 249 CFM at top speed for both the Vital 200S and the original Core 400S, and at quieter settings both land near 130 CFM (128 CFM for the Vital at 41.9 dBA, 134 CFM for the Core under 45 dBA).
So performance doesn't decide this one. The pre-filter, the shape and the street price on the day do. The Core 400S-P's round body pulls air from every side, so it can stand in the middle of a room. The Vital wins when hair is the problem.
Why the washable pre-filter matters with pets
Pet hair is a pre-filter problem before it is a HEPA problem. On the Core 400S-P, the pre-filter mesh is wrapped around the filter cylinder: it can be vacuumed in place, but when the cylinder is due, the mesh goes in the trash with it. The Vital 200S-P's pre-filter is a separate part that can be pulled out and rinsed, and Levoit pairs it with a U-shaped inlet meant to stop fur from choking the airflow.
That design is the main reason to choose this model, and owner reviews show why it matters. A common complaint is that in multi-pet or renovation-dust homes, filters load well before the stated interval, sometimes around three or four months. Another recurring pattern is clicking or vibration after a filter change that turns out to be a pre-filter or main filter not fully seated. Reseating both is the first thing to try.
Rinsing the pre-filter every week or two in shedding season is cheap insurance. It doesn't remove the need to replace the main filter, but it keeps hair from blanketing it.
Pet Mode, noise and bedroom use
Pet Mode, per Levoit's manual, runs 15 minutes on the third fan speed, then 60 minutes on the second, and repeats. The detail that makes it usable at night is Light Detection, and it ships switched off. Turn it on in the VeSync app and, once the room goes dark, the display switches off and Pet Mode stays on speed 2, so a bedroom doesn't get a 3 a.m. jump to the louder speed. Skip that step and Pet Mode keeps cycling whatever the lights are doing.
The daytime cycle is audible, though. HouseFresh measured the Vital 200S at three feet:
- Speed 1: 38.3 dBA
- Speed 2: 41.9 dBA
- Speed 3: 53.8 dBA
- Speed 4: 57.7 dBA
Levoit's 23–54 dB range comes from its own test conditions; the HouseFresh figures, taken at a fixed three feet, are the better guide to what you will hear. Speed 2 is the sweet spot for a bedroom. At about 128 CFM in a 12 × 15 ft room with 8 ft ceilings (1,440 cubic feet), it gives roughly 5.3 air changes per hour at 41.9 dBA. At full speed it measured 57.7 dBA, quieter than the original Core 400S's 60.3 dBA in the same reviewer's tests, which is useful when a smoke event calls for maximum fan.
Filters and three-year cost
The housing takes four genuine Levoit filters:
| Filter | Part | List price |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (white) | Vital 200S-RF, LRF-V201-WUS | $49.99 (Levoit) |
| Pet Allergy (yellow) | Vital 200S-RF-PA, LRF-V201-YUS | ~$59.99 (Amazon) |
| Toxin Absorber (green) | Vital 200S-RF-TX, LRF-V201-GUS | $59.99 (Levoit) |
| Smoke Remover (blue) | Vital 200S-RF-SR, LRF-V201-BUS | price not confirmed |
Levoit doesn't publish data showing the tinted versions catch more particles, so the white filter is the default. The full family is covered on the Levoit Vital 200S Replacement Filter page.
Three-year cost, assuming a $150 street price, the $49.99 standard filter, and $0.17/kWh running 24/7 on speed 2 (8.01 W measured by HouseFresh, about 70 kWh or $12 a year):
- Light-use home, filter every 12 months (the interval in Levoit's manual): $150 + 2 filters ($100) + $36 = about $286.
- Typical home, filter every 9 months (middle of the filter listing's 6–12 month range): $150 + 3 filters ($150) + $36 electricity = about $336.
- Heavy-shedding home, filter every 6 months: $150 + 5 filters ($250) + $36 = about $436.
- Running at full speed instead (44.55 W measured) adds about $66 a year in electricity.

The catches
The bonded main filter is the biggest one. When the carbon layer is spent, usually first in a home with cooking smells or a litter box, the HEPA-grade layer goes in the bin with it, even if it still had particle life left.
The carbon is thin. The Smoke Remover variant helps with odor, but no slim bonded carbon layer fixes a heavy smoking or VOC problem. For that, carbon weight matters more than the purifier's badge.
The app is the other recurring complaint. Owner reviews mention VeSync connection drops and objections to the permissions the app requests. The purifier works fine from its own buttons, so the app is optional rather than a weak point in the cleaning.
Is it the right one for you?
Buy the Vital 200S-P if pets shed in a room between about 250 and 390 sq ft and you want app control and scheduling. Its sizing math is easy to check against your own floor plan with the room size calculator, and it sits naturally on a shortlist from the best air purifiers for pets.
Choose something else in these cases:
- Bedroom under ~220 sq ft, no pets: the Levoit Core 300S does the job for less and uses cheaper filters.
- Purifier has to stand mid-room: the Levoit Core 400S-P, whose 360° intake suits that placement, gives up about 20 CFM.
- Open-plan space over ~400 sq ft: the Levoit Core 600S covers about 606 sq ft at the same air-change standard.

Pros and cons
What works
- AHAM Verifide 250 CFM smoke CADR, about 30 sq ft more coverage than the Core 400S-P
- Separate washable pre-filter, so pet hair can be rinsed off without touching the main filter
- Once Light Detection is switched on in the VeSync app (it ships off), Pet Mode holds speed 2 and the display goes dark when the room does
- Low running power: HouseFresh measured 8.01 W on speed 2 (about $12 a year around the clock)
- Four Levoit filter variants (standard, Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber, Smoke Remover) on one housing
What doesn't
- HEPA and carbon are bonded into one ~$50 block, so a saturated carbon layer means replacing both
- Levoit's manual rates the filter for about 12 months, but pet homes will likely sit at the 6-month end of the filter listing's 6–12 month range
- Top speed measured 57.7 dBA by HouseFresh, too loud for sleeping
- Same filter and body as the plain Vital 200S, so the '-P' name adds confusion, not hardware

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Levoit Vital 200S and Vital 200S-P?
No hardware difference is documented. Both use the LAP-V201S model code and the Vital 200S-RF filter family, and the original Vital 200S manual already describes the washable pre-filter and Pet Mode. The older paperwork listed a single 245 CFM CADR; the current 200S-P listing carries AHAM Verifide figures of 250/254/289 CFM, and both manuals give 51 W and 13.2 lb. Buy whichever is cheaper.
Is the Vital 200S-P better than the Core 400S-P?
For most pet homes, yes. It has a slightly higher AHAM smoke CADR (250 vs 231 CFM) and a separate washable pre-filter, while the Core 400S-P's pre-filter is bonded to its filter cylinder. The Core 400S-P is the better shape if the purifier has to stand in the middle of a room, since it draws air from all sides.
What does Pet Mode do on the Vital 200S-P?
According to Levoit's manual, Pet Mode runs 15 minutes on the third fan speed, then 60 minutes on the second, and keeps cycling. Light Detection is off out of the box; switch it on in the VeSync app and a dark room turns the display off and holds Pet Mode on the second speed, so it does not ramp up overnight.
What filter does the Levoit Vital 200S-P use?
The Vital 200S-RF (part LRF-V201-WUS), list price $49.99 at Levoit. The same housing also takes the Pet Allergy (Vital 200S-RF-PA), Toxin Absorber (Vital 200S-RF-TX) and Smoke Remover (Vital 200S-RF-SR) variants. Levoit's manual says to replace it about every 12 months; the filter listing gives 6–12 months, and pets or smoke push it toward the short end.
How big a room can the Vital 200S-P clean?
About 388 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, which is a 16 × 24 ft living room with 8 ft ceilings. Levoit's 1,862 sq ft figure assumes one air change per hour, which is too slow for allergies or smoke.
Does the Levoit Vital 200S-P produce ozone?
It relies on mechanical filtration: pre-filter, HEPA-grade main filter and activated carbon. No ionizer or ozone-producing stage is listed in its specifications, so it is safe to run continuously in an occupied room.
