No single purifier on our list fully covers 1,000 sq ft. A room that size needs about 645 CFM of smoke CADR, and the strongest unit we track, the AirDoctor AD5500i, delivers 556 CFM. For most open-plan spaces of this size the better answer is two units: a pair of Levoit Core 600S purifiers gives 782 CFM for $560–$640, and two Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max units give 870 CFM when both are on sale.
The math for 1,000 sq ft
The site rule is smoke CADR × 1.55 = square feet covered, which works out to about 4.8 air changes an hour under an 8 ft ceiling.
- 1,000 ÷ 1.55 = 645.2, so the target is about 645 CFM.
- Check: 1,000 sq ft × 8 ft = 8,000 cubic feet. 645 CFM × 60 = 38,700 cubic feet an hour, or 4.8 air changes.
- At 9 ft ceilings the room holds 9,000 cubic feet and needs about 720 CFM; at 10 ft, about 800 CFM.
A 25 × 40 ft open living, dining and kitchen floor, a finished basement or the whole ground floor of a small house all sit near 1,000 sq ft. The room size calculator works out other shapes and heights.

Premium · 556 CFM CADR · 862 sq ft

If one box is a must, the AirDoctor AD5500i is the strongest we track. Its 556 CFM covers about 862 sq ft by our rule, so in 1,000 sq ft it delivers about 4.2 air changes an hour, 86% of the target. AirDoctor's own claim is 1,043 sq ft at 4 air changes, and the arithmetic checks out at that slightly lower rate.
The cost is steep: $999 to buy (it's often on sale) and $354.99 a year for the combo pack of two UltraHEPA and four Carbon/VOC filters, so about $2,060 over three years before power. Its 110 W maximum would add about $164 a year if run flat out. In return you get one plug, one app and a deep carbon stage for cooking smells and fumes. It also has an optional ionizer on its own button, off by default per AirDoctor. Modern Castle measured 66.9 dB at full speed, so it's not a unit to run on max in the room where you watch TV.
Best value pair: Levoit Core 600S

Mid-range · 391 CFM CADR · 606 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
Two Levoit Core 600S units are the setup we'd point most people to. Together they move 782 CFM, enough for about 1,212 sq ft, which gives a 1,000 sq ft space 5.9 air changes an hour and leaves headroom for 9 ft ceilings. The pair costs $560–$640, still well under one AirDoctor.
Running costs stay sensible because each filter is about $60 a year, so $120 for the pair and roughly $920–$1,000 over three years including purchase. At their 49 W maximums, two units running nonstop would draw about $146 a year in power, and auto mode rarely runs them that hard. Both join one VeSync account, so you can schedule and watch them from the same app. Neither has an ionizer.
Most airflow from a pair: Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max

Mid-range · 435 CFM CADR · 674 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
Two Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max units produce 870 CFM, about 6.5 air changes an hour in 1,000 sq ft, the most of any setup here. On sale they cost $230 each, so the pair can come in under $500, and their 46 W maximums make them the most efficient pair to run.
Filters are where the bill grows. Each $69.99 cartridge lasts six to nine months, so a pair needs $186–$280 a year and the three-year total spreads from about $1,020 to $1,540. Both units also carry Blueair's always-on electrostatic charging stage. If you want this much airflow without it, two Coway Airmega 450 units give 878 CFM for $700–$1,000.
Best pair without an app: Coway Airmega 350

Mid-range · 352 CFM CADR · 546 sq ft
Paid links: we may earn a commission at no cost to you. Disclosure
Two Coway Airmega 350 units give 704 CFM, about 1,091 sq ft, or 5.3 air changes an hour in 1,000 sq ft. At sale prices near $240 each the pair costs less than $500, and they have no ionizer and no app to set up.
Filters run $79–$89 each per year, so $158–$178 for two and about $950–$1,210 over three years. Each unit has a hidden sensor-sensitivity setting, which is handy when one sits by the kitchen and reacts to cooking while the other is in the quieter half of the room. Their 704 CFM combined falls just short of the 720 CFM a 9 ft ceiling needs.
Pairing the popular one: Coway Airmega 400

Premium · 328 CFM CADR · 508 sq ft

Many readers already own a Coway Airmega 400 and want to know whether a second one finishes the job. It does, barely: two units total 656 CFM, about 1,017 sq ft, or 4.9 air changes an hour in 1,000 sq ft.
It's also the most expensive pair on the table. At $400–$450 street each, plus $129 a year per unit for its two-filter Max2 set, three years come to about $1,570–$1,670. If you're starting from zero, two Airmega 350s cost hundreds less for more airflow. If one Airmega 400 is already running in the living area, adding a cheaper second unit for the far end, such as a Core 600S, gets you to 719 CFM.
Splitting 1,000 sq ft between two purifiers
Divide the space by how it's used rather than in half. An open floor of about 600 sq ft of living area and 400 sq ft of kitchen and dining is a common shape: put the bigger unit where you sit and the smaller one near the kitchen. A Levoit Core 600S (606 sq ft) in the lounge and a Levoit Vital 200S-P (388 sq ft) by the dining table add up to 641 CFM for $410–$500, just 4 CFM shy of the target, and about $110 a year in filters.
Keep the two units apart. Side by side, they mostly re-clean the same air; at opposite ends of an L-shaped room, each one covers its own corner. If doors divide the space, size each zone separately with the 500 sq ft guide logic: every closed room needs its own CADR.
When a single big box claim isn't enough
Box figures for "1,000 sq ft and up" are almost always quoted at one or two air changes an hour. The Coway Airmega 450, for instance, is listed by Coway for 3,285 sq ft at 1 air change, but its 439 CFM covers about 680 sq ft at our standard. The IQAir HealthPro Plus is rated by IQAir for up to 1,125 sq ft with no AHAM CADR; at its 300 cfm top airflow that claim works out to about 2 air changes an hour, and at our standard the same airflow supports roughly 465 sq ft.
If you need to filter more than one big room, a ducted HVAC upgrade can make more sense than three or four portables; our whole-house guide covers that route. For rooms in the 500–860 sq ft range, our large rooms list has the single-unit picks. Before you settle on a pair, put both wattages into the running cost calculator to see the yearly power bill at your electricity rate.
Frequently asked questions
What CADR do I need for 1,000 sq ft?
About 645 CFM of smoke CADR for roughly 4.8 air changes an hour under an 8 ft ceiling (1,000 ÷ 1.55). With 9 ft ceilings, the room holds 9,000 cubic feet and needs about 720 CFM for the same rate.
Is there a single air purifier that covers 1,000 sq ft?
Not at our 4.8 air-change standard among the models we cover. The AirDoctor AD5500i comes closest at 556 CFM, about 862 sq ft. AirDoctor rates it for 1,043 sq ft at 4 air changes an hour, which is a fair claim at that lower rate.
Is it better to buy two air purifiers or one big one?
For 1,000 sq ft, two usually wins. Two Levoit Core 600S units deliver 782 CFM for $560–$640, more airflow than any single unit here at well under the AirDoctor's $999. Two units also clean an L-shaped or divided space more evenly, because each one works on its own zone.
Do two air purifiers' CADRs add together?
Yes, in the same connected space. Two 391 CFM units deliver about 782 CFM of filtered air between them. The total only holds if the zones are open to each other; a unit behind a closed door cleans that room and nothing else.
How much does it cost to run two air purifiers?
Less than the filters, usually. Two Levoit Core 600S units at their 49 W maximum, running nonstop at $0.17/kWh, would cost about $146 a year; auto mode keeps real use well below that. Their filters add about $120 a year.
