Winix 5500-2 Filter Reset and Red Light: What Each Means

The Winix 5500-2 shows two different lights that owners lump together as "the red light." The filter replacement indicator is cleared by switching the unit on and pressing the recessed Filter Reset button with a paper clip for at least 5 seconds. The color-coded air quality indicator turns red when its odor sensor detects poor air, and no reset button touches it.

Do this first

Winix's current 5500-2 manual and the older Use & Care Guide both give these steps for the reset. The older edition calls the button the RESET switch.

  1. Turn the unit off before opening it. Grip the front panel by its upper edge and pull it gently forward.
  2. Release the pre-filter by pressing the tabs near its top, then lift out the washable AOC carbon filter and the True HEPA filter behind it.
  3. Unbag the new Filter H set. Winix warns that running the 5500-2 with filters still in plastic can cause abnormal noise, warping or even a fire from overheating.
  4. Load from the back forward: True HEPA first, then the AOC carbon filter in front of it.
  5. Refit the pre-filter. Seat its bottom tabs in the slots low on each side, then swing it up until the top tabs click into place.
  6. Close the front panel. Hook its bottom latch into the base and rotate it upward until the magnets pull it shut.
  7. Switch the unit on, press the recessed Filter Reset button with a straightened paper clip and hold it for at least 5 seconds. The current manual says you'll hear a beep, after which the filter replacement indicator disappears.

The older manual doesn't mention a beep. If your unit stays silent, hold for a full 5 seconds anyway and check whether the indicator has gone out.

If the red light is the air quality indicator

The color light reports what the Smart Sensor smells: blue for good, amber for fair, red for poor. This sensor reacts to odorous gases rather than dust, so a pan of onions or a squirt of bathroom cleaner can push it to red even with brand-new filters fitted.

Before concluding it's stuck, rule out these 5500-2 quirks:

  • It was just switched on. For the first 30 seconds the indicator cycles through blue, amber and red, and the sensor needs about 4 minutes before it settles on a reading. The older manual describes a flashing indicator for those first 4 minutes instead.
  • The sensor is dirty. The older manual's troubleshooting table suggests wiping the odor sensor with a damp cloth and drying it.
  • Something nearby is still giving off fumes. Ventilate the room, run the fan on High or Turbo, and give the indicator time to step down to amber, then blue.

If it stays red for days in a fresh-smelling room, the sensor is the likely culprit; our stuck-red sensor guide works through that case.

Why the filter light won't go out

  • The unit was off during the press. Winix specifies that the 5500-2 must be running. Switch it on and try again.
  • The paper clip missed the button. It has to press the recessed button itself, not the panel around it, so use a straight, stiff piece of wire.
  • The press was too short. Count past 5 seconds; letting go early is the most common miss.
  • The front panel isn't fully closed. The current manual has you shut the panel before the reset. If the magnets haven't pulled it flush, reseat the bottom latch and close it again.

Owners who have since added a newer Winix will find its steps in the Winix 5530 filter reset guide.

When the filters really are due

Winix rates the True HEPA panel at about 12 months and says it can't be washed. The pre-filter is permanent and should be vacuumed or brushed every 14 days, rinsed in room-temperature water only if it's very dirty, then dried for 24 hours or more. The AOC carbon filter gets rinsed under running room-temperature water about every 3 months, with no soap and nothing hotter than 104°F, and dried completely before it goes back in; a damp carbon panel can start to smell.

The older manual adds one useful rule: replace the set early, light or no light, if the filters look heavily soiled, smell bad or the airflow has clearly weakened.

Warranty and support

Winix's current manual lists a 2-year limited warranty for the US and Canada; you'll need proof of purchase, and registering at winixamerica.com stores it for you. Call Winix on (877) 699-4649 if no button responds, the indicator won't clear after a confirmed 5-second press with the unit on, or it comes back within days. Have the model name, a description of the fault and your contact details ready.

The right filter set

The Winix 5500-2 Filter Set is Winix's Filter H, part 116130: one True HEPA filter plus one washable AOC carbon filter, sold as a one-year set. It fits the Winix 5500-2 and the AM80 only. Winix's own store lists it at $84.99, but on 2026-10-01 Amazon had it at $61.30 and Walmart at $40.99, so budget about $60 a year; our Winix brand review compares that with the newer models' Filter Q. For a multi-year view that includes electricity, try the filter cost calculator. If the pre-filter itself is torn, the older manual asks owners to call Winix for a replacement; it lists the part as 4521-0012-04.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a paper clip to reset a Winix 5500-2?

The Filter Reset button is recessed into the control panel, out of reach of a fingertip. Winix's manual tells owners to use a thin object such as a paper clip and hold it down for 5 seconds with the unit running.

Do I have to replace the carbon filter every year on the 5500-2?

Winix says to replace both the True HEPA and the washable AOC carbon filter when the filter light comes on, roughly every 12 months. In between, the carbon panel is rinsed about every 3 months, and the current manual says it can be washed up to four times.

Does Filter H fit the Winix 5510 or 5530?

No. Filter H (116130) fits only the 5500-2 and the AM80. The 5510 and 5530 take the different Filter Q set, so spares can't be shared between the older and newer models.

Why is the air quality light off at night?

The older 5500-2 manual says the air quality LED is disabled in Sleep Mode, and in Auto Mode the light sensor switches the unit into Sleep Mode when the room goes dark. A dark indicator overnight is expected.

Is my 5500-2 under warranty?

The current 5500-2 manual lists a 2-year limited warranty valid in the US and Canada with proof of purchase. An older edition of the manual printed a 1-year term, so check the warranty page in the manual that came with your unit.
