Coway Mighty Making Noise? Causes and Fixes by Sound

A Coway Mighty (AP-1512HH) that suddenly sounds loud is usually doing one of three things: running at speed 3 because its dust sensor thinks the air is dirty, restarting from Eco mode, or vibrating around a filter bag or cover that isn't right. All three are fixable in about ten minutes. A grinding sound or any burning smell is different, and Coway's manual says to unplug and call.

Do this first

These steps come from Coway's AP-1512HH user manual. Work down the list until the noise stops.

  1. Check the speed lights. Press Speed and watch the cycle: Auto, 1, 2, 3, ECO. If the unit is in Auto and showing speed 3 while the round lamp on top is red or dark purple, the loudness is deliberate. Drop it to 1 to confirm the noise follows the fan speed.
  2. Unplug and open the front cover by pulling its upper part toward you.
  3. Look for plastic. Coway's manual says every filter's plastic bag has to come off before installation. A bag left on the HEPA panel flutters loudly and blocks the airflow too.
  4. Check the filter order and direction. From the front: pre-filter, deodorization filter, True HEPA filter, each with its "front" side facing you. Push the pre-filter's grip in firmly so it locks.
  5. Refit the cover evenly. The fan motor is designed to shut down when the cover is open, so a cover that isn't fully home can cut the fan out, and one that is half-latched has room to rattle.
  6. Check the floor and the gaps. Coway says not to use the Mighty on a sloped surface and to leave at least 20 cm (about 8 in) to walls or nearby objects and 30 to 60 cm (1 to 2 ft) clear above it.
  7. Clean the dust sensor if Auto keeps racing. Open the sensor cover on the right-hand side, brush or vacuum the vents, then wipe the lens with a lightly damp cotton swab and dry it with a clean one. Coway lists this every 2 months.

Fan stuck on high in Auto? Adjust the sensor

If the sensor is clean and the Mighty still runs at full speed in clean air, its sensitivity setting may be too high. Coway's manual gives this sequence:

  1. With the purifier on, press and hold Speed and Ionizer together for 2 seconds. The speed lights flash with a beep.
  2. Press Speed to choose: speed light 1 is Sensitive, 2 is Standard, 3 is Insensitive.
  3. Hold Speed and Ionizer for 2 seconds again to save. Leaving the panel alone for 10 seconds also applies the new setting.

Coway's guide for this: if the pollution reading stays at the highest level after 2 hours of running, move toward Insensitive. The Coway Mighty light colors guide explains what each lamp color is reporting.

Match the sound to the cause

What you hearMost likely cause on the MightyWhat to do
Fan surges up and down on its ownAuto mode reacting to cooking, vacuuming or a sensitive sensorSet a fixed speed, or lower the sensitivity
Silence, then the fan starts by itselfEco mode restartingNormal; choose Auto or a fixed speed to stop it

The Eco restart catches people out at night: after 30 minutes of clean air the fan stops, then spins up again by itself when the sensor sees particles, often at 3 a.m.

HouseFresh's Coway troubleshooting guide adds one Mighty-specific cause: the outlet grille has gaps wide enough for a coin or a small toy to drop through. With the unit unplugged, shine a light down the grille before assuming the motor is failing.

For causes that apply to any purifier, see our loud or rattling noise guide.

A noisy Mighty can mean tired filters

Coway's troubleshooting table links weaker airflow and a bad smell from the outlet to filters past their cycle, and a clogged stack also makes the fan strain at the same speed. The pre-filter needs cleaning every 2 to 4 weeks, the carbon sheet replacing every 6 months and the HEPA panel every year.

A blinking Odor or HEPA LED confirms it. After swapping, hold Filter Reset for 2 seconds; the filter light reset guide covers resets after an early change.

When to call Coway

Coway's manual says to unplug the purifier immediately and call the service center if it makes a strange noise together with a burning smell or smoke. Also call if a grinding sound keeps going after you've confirmed the filters are unwrapped and stacked correctly and the cover is properly fitted.

The warranty covers the Mighty's motor and electronic parts for 3 years and other parts for 1 year, for units bought new from Coway or an authorized seller. Coway asks for proof of purchase and a video of the issue, and takes claims at 1-800-285-0982 or info@cowaymega.com.

If it's simply too loud for your room

A Mighty that needs speed 3 most of the day is often undersized. On this site's sizing rule it suits rooms up to about 361 sq ft; past that, it will spend its time at the loud end. A bigger purifier on a low setting is quieter than a small one flat out, and the best quiet air purifiers list has options by room size. For a bedroom, the Coway Airmega Mighty2 is rated quieter at its lowest speed and has no ionizer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Coway Mighty turn itself off and back on?

That's Eco mode. Coway's manual says the fan stops after 30 minutes with no pollution detected and starts again when the dust sensor picks up particles. Press Speed until Auto or a fixed speed is lit if the stop-start bothers you.

Does the Coway Mighty have a sleep mode?

Not as a named mode. The AP-1512HH manual lists the Speed button cycle as Auto, 1, 2, 3 and ECO. For a bedroom, speed 1 is the quiet setting, and the timer can switch the purifier off after 1, 4 or 8 hours.

How loud is the Coway Mighty supposed to be?

The figures in this site's catalog put it at about 24 dB on its lowest speed and about 54 dB on its highest. Speed 3 is meant to be clearly audible; a rattle, tick or grind on top of the airflow is the part that isn't normal.

Will Coway fix a noisy Mighty under warranty?

Coway's US warranty covers the Mighty's motor and electronic parts for 3 years and other parts for 1 year, for units bought new from authorized sellers. It asks for proof of purchase and a video of the problem, so record the noise before you call.

Could the ionizer be making the noise?

Coway's manual doesn't describe the ionizer as making any sound. It can be switched off with the Ionizer button, and doing that is a harmless way to rule it out while you check the more likely causes.
