Quick verdict
A strong pick for bedrooms, nurseries and offices of up to about 440 sq ft if you want low running costs and an app. If you'd prefer an ionizer you can switch off, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty is the proven alternative. For living rooms over 450 sq ft, step up to the 311i+ Max or the 211i Max.
Ideal for
- Bedrooms and home offices up to ~439 sq ft
- Low running costs ($44.99 filter, 32 W max)
- App control with schedules and child lock
Not ideal for
- Odor or VOC removal (thin carbon layer)
- Buyers who want to switch off the ionizer (consider the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty)
- Open living rooms over ~450 sq ft
The full picture
The 311i Max is Blueair's mid-size Blue Pure: 283 CFM smoke CADR (about 439 sq ft at 4.8 ACH), 32 W rated maximum, app control and auto mode from an optical PM2.5 sensor. HouseFresh measured roughly 108 CFM at a sleep-friendly 37 dBA on speed 1, enough for about 4.5 air changes an hour in a 12×15 bedroom. The F3MAX filter costs $44.99 and is rated for up to nine months. Weak points are a thin carbon layer, an always-on ionizing stage, and frequent mix-ups with the bigger 311i+ Max, which uses a different F3MAX+ filter.

The in-depth review
The Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max is a solid, cheap-to-run purifier for bedrooms, home offices and mid-size living rooms. Its 283 CFM smoke CADR covers about 439 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, it's rated at just 32 watts, and the standard filter costs $44.99. It suits buyers who want app control and quiet overnight running for $229.99 list. Skip it if you need serious odor removal or want an ionizer you can switch off. And before you click buy, make sure you're getting the model you mean, because Blueair also sells a larger 311i+ Max with a different filter.
311i Max or 311i+ Max?
These are two different purifiers that share a number, and the filters don't swap. Blueair's current spec sheets:
| Blue Pure 311i Max | Blue Pure 311i+ Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke / dust / pollen CADR | 283 / 314 / 365 CFM | 339 / 370 / 446 CFM |
| Coverage at 4.8 ACH | ~439 sq ft | ~525 sq ft |
| Rated power | 32 W | 38 W |
| Height / weight | 19 in / 7.8 lb | 21 in / 7.9 lb |
| Standard filter | F3MAX, $44.99 | F3MAX+, $49.99 |
| List price | $229.99 | ~$299.99 (sold as a $599.98 two-pack) |
The plus model moves about 20% more smoke and suits a living room better. For a typical bedroom or office, the plain 311i Max is enough.
Blueair's own website doesn't help with the confusion. The F3MAX+ filter's web address contains "311i-max," and the FAQ on the regular 311i Max filter page says it's compatible with the "311i+." The 311i+ Max page also lists a CADR of 300 in its FAQ, which contradicts its own spec table. Go by the model name on the label inside your purifier, and check the filter title for "F3MAX" versus "F3MAX+."
How it performs in real rooms
The site's sizing rule gives 283 × 1.55 = 439 sq ft, which matches Blueair's recommendation. That's a 20×22 room, or a large primary bedroom with space to spare. The 2,107 sq ft "cleans in one hour" figure is the one-air-change marketing number.
HouseFresh's test gives a clear picture of how it performs at quiet speeds, which is how a bedroom purifier actually runs. HouseFresh measured an estimated PM1 CADR of 220 CFM at top speed, 185 CFM on speed 2 (47.8 dBA) and 108 CFM on speed 1 (37 dBA).
Here's what that means in a 12×15 bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling (1,440 cubic feet):
- Speed 1 (37 dBA): 108 CFM is about 4.5 air changes an hour, just under the 4.8 target and quiet enough for sleep.
- Speed 2 (47.8 dBA): 185 CFM is about 7.7 changes an hour, which is what you want during pollen season. You'll hear it, though.
For rooms up to about 250 sq ft, it can sleep on speed 1 and still do the job. In a 400 sq ft living room, expect to run speed 2 or higher in auto mode. The room size calculator handles odd ceiling heights.
Filters and 3-year cost
The standard F3MAX Particle + Carbon filter is $44.99, and Blueair says it lasts up to nine months. HouseFresh budgets for six-month changes. SmokeBlock (twice the carbon) and AllergenBlock versions cost more and fit the same unit. The washable fabric pre-filter costs $10.99 if you want a spare or a new color.
Three-year math at the $229.99 list price:
- Filters: 3 replacements at nine-month intervals ($135), or 5 at six months ($225).
- Electricity: HouseFresh measured 13.4 W on speed 2, about $20 a year at $0.17/kWh running 24/7. At Blueair's rated 32 W maximum, it's about $48 a year.
- Total: roughly $425 for a speed-2 bedroom unit with nine-month filters, and about $600 for one running flat out with six-month changes.
That's cheap for a purifier with this much airflow. HouseFresh found it cheaper to run than most similar performers, thanks to the low wattage and inexpensive genuine filters. Compare it against rivals in the filter cost calculator.
Noise and light at night
Blueair quotes 23 to 50 dB. Independent meters read higher, as they usually do: HouseFresh measured 34.9 dBA in sleep mode and 57.7 dBA at top speed, and AirPurifierFirst measured 40.2 to 59.5 dBA. HouseFresh still rated it quieter than the Winix 5510 and the Coway Airmega 200M. AirPurifierFirst noted an odd buzz at maximum speed on both the 311i Max and the smaller 511i Max, and similar reports show up in owner reviews. Treat top speed as a clear-the-room setting, not an all-night one.
A ring of light on the front cycles through five colors, from blue (excellent) to red (very polluted). Night mode drops the fan to its lowest speed and dims the lights. Blueair lists the controls as speeds 1, 2 and 3 plus Auto and Night.
Smart features
The app covers what you'd actually use: fan speed, auto and night modes, a child lock, schedules and RealTrack filter-life tracking, which estimates wear from fan speed, hours and pollution levels instead of a simple timer. Blueair also lists smart-home integration.
The weak point is the sensor. HouseFresh found the 311i Max uses an optical PM2.5 sensor, not the laser type in the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max, so it needs occasional cleaning to keep auto mode honest. If auto mode starts acting strangely, a dusty sensor is a likely cause, and the sensor troubleshooting guide walks through it. To reset the red filter light after a change, Blueair says to hold the fan-speed button for about 15 seconds until every LED lights up.
The catches
Light carbon. HouseFresh's teardown found a carbon-impregnated fabric layer, not loose pellets, and its verdict was blunt: "pretty useless for VOCs." Cooking smells and pet odor will fade faster with the SmokeBlock filter, but this isn't an odor machine.
An ionizer you can't switch off. HEPASilent's electrostatic stage is always on and produces small amounts of ozone. Coway's AP-1512HH and Winix's 5500-2 let you turn their ionizers off, but this doesn't. See are ionizer purifiers safe if that matters to you.
Filters change with each generation. Owners of the older Blue Pure 311 Auto can't reuse their spare filters. HouseFresh notes Blueair has redesigned the filter with each new 311 generation.
Is it the right one for you?
Buy the Blueair Blue Pure 311i Max for a bedroom, nursery or office of up to about 440 sq ft if you want low running costs, app control and quiet sleep-speed operation. Register it within 60 days to stretch the warranty from one year to three.
If you want a purifier with a switchable ionizer and a bit less airflow for less money, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty (233 CFM, about 361 sq ft) is the classic alternative. For a living room over 450 sq ft, step up to the 311i+ Max or the Blueair Blue Pure 211i Max. And if you're cross-shopping smart mid-size purifiers with purely mechanical filtration, the Levoit Core 400S-P belongs on your list.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the Blueair 311i Max and 311i+ Max?
The 311i+ Max is bigger and stronger: 339 vs 283 CFM smoke CADR (about 525 vs 439 sq ft), 38 vs 32 W, and 21 vs 19 inches tall. It uses the F3MAX+ filter ($49.99) rather than the F3MAX ($44.99), and the two filters aren't interchangeable.
What filter does the Blueair 311i Max use?
The F3MAX Particle + Carbon filter, $44.99 at Blueair and rated for up to nine months. SmokeBlock (twice the carbon) and AllergenBlock versions also fit. Check for F3MAX, not F3MAX+, since even Blueair's own pages mix the names up.
Is the Blueair 311i Max good for a bedroom?
Yes, it's sized for one. HouseFresh measured about 108 CFM at 37 dBA on speed 1, roughly 4.5 air changes an hour in a 12×15 bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling. Night mode drops to the lowest speed and dims the lights.
Does the Blueair 311i Max produce ozone?
Its HEPASilent stage ionizes particles and can't be turned off, and HouseFresh notes this generates small amounts of ozone. If you want a purifier with an ionizer you can switch off, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH Mighty and Winix 5500-2 offer one.
Will my old Blue Pure 311 Auto filters fit the 311i Max?
No. HouseFresh notes Blueair has changed the filter design with each 311 generation, so older 311 and 311 Auto filters won't fit the 311i Max.
