Quick verdict

The Core 400S-P is a sound choice for a 250 to 360 sq ft living room or large bedroom, especially if the purifier has to stand mid-room, where its all-round intake helps. For pet hair, the Levoit Vital 200S-P is the better buy: it is rated slightly higher (250 CFM) and has a pre-filter you can rinse. If the room is over about 400 sq ft, skip both and buy the Levoit Core 600S.

Ideal for

  • Living rooms and large bedrooms up to ~358 sq ft
  • Mid-room placement (360° intake on a 10.8 in round base)
  • Owners who already stock Core 400S filters (same filter fits)
  • Buyers who want laser-sensor auto mode with no ionizer

Not ideal for

  • Rooms over ~400 sq ft (Core 600S territory)
  • Heavy shedders, where the bonded pre-filter loads quickly
  • Small bedrooms under ~220 sq ft, where the Core 300S is cheaper to own

The full picture

The Core 400S-P is Levoit's mid-size smart cylinder, sold today with AHAM Verifide ratings of 231 CFM smoke, 240 dust and 259 pollen. The body, 38 W rating, 10.8 × 10.8 × 20.5 in size and Core 400S filter are the same as the original Core 400S, whose older paperwork claimed a single 260 CFM CADR and 403 sq ft. It fills the gap between the Core 300S (141 CFM) and the Core 600S, and it has no ionizer, unlike the similarly named PlasmaPro 400S.

This is a research-based review — our analysis draws on manufacturer specifications, manuals, warranty terms, and verified owner feedback rather than our own hands-on testing, and we note where a detail couldn't be confirmed. How we review

The in-depth review

The Levoit Core 400S-P is the current version of the Core 400S, not a new machine. It has the same 38 W cylinder, the same filter and the same app, now sold with an AHAM Verifide rating of 231 CFM for smoke instead of the old 260 CFM claim. It is a good fit for a living room or large bedroom up to about 358 sq ft, and it fills the gap between the Levoit Core 300S and the Levoit Core 600S. The catch: the Levoit Vital 200S-P is rated for slightly more airflow and has a rinse-off pre-filter, so the Core 400S-P earns its place mainly where a round, 360-degree purifier suits the room better.

What does the "-P" actually change?

Set the original Core 400S manual next to the current 400S-P listing and the hardware lines match:

Levoit hasn't published a changelog and doesn't document any hardware change. The old manual gave one CADR with no smoke, dust and pollen split. The new figures are the independently verified AHAM set, and smoke is normally the lowest of the three. Independent data doesn't point to a weaker fan: HouseFresh, testing the original Core 400S, estimated 249 CFM at top speed. The most likely reading is a stricter, more specific rating on the same machine, though Levoit hasn't said so.

That matters for research. Older reviews quoting 260 CFM and 403 sq ft describe the same purifier on older paperwork. The "-P" suffix now appears across Levoit's current lineup, including the Vital 200S-P and Core 600S-P, next to AHAM-verified numbers.

Don't confuse it with the PlasmaPro 400S

Some retailers, including Best Buy and Home Depot, sell a "PlasmaPro 400S," also listed as "PlasmaPro 400S-P." That is the Core 400S body with Levoit's PlasmaPro ionizer added, which releases positive and negative ions into the room. The Core 400S-P has no ionizer.

Both take the same filter, so a mix-up won't strand anyone on parts. Anyone who wants purely mechanical filtration should check the name on the box, and the trade-offs of ion-based add-ons are covered in are ionizer and ozone air purifiers safe.

Where it sits between the Core 300S and Core 600S

Using the site's 4.8 air-changes-per-hour sizing (smoke CADR × 1.55):

  • Levoit Core 300S: 141 CFM, about 219 sq ft. A 12 × 18 ft bedroom.
  • Levoit Core 400S-P: 231 CFM, about 358 sq ft. A 15 × 24 ft living room, or an 18 × 20 ft primary bedroom.
  • Levoit Core 600S: about 606 sq ft. An open kitchen and living area.

So the Core 400S-P is the right step for rooms between about 220 and 360 sq ft. Past roughly 360 sq ft, buy the Core 600S rather than running the 400S-P flat out all day; its top speed measured 60.3 dBA in HouseFresh's tests, which is not a sound to live with.

Levoit's own "up to 1,733 sq ft" headline assumes one air change per hour. That's fine for keeping a clean room clean, but too slow for allergy season or wildfire smoke. The room size calculator shows the difference for your exact dimensions.

Noise and power in a real room

HouseFresh measured the original Core 400S (same hardware) at three feet:

SettingNoisePower
Sleep35.5 dBA3.05 W
Speed 138.3 dBA5.28 W
Speed 243.2 dBA8.51 W
Speed 351.2 dBA16.41 W
Speed 460.3 dBA39.64 W

Levoit's 22 dB floor comes from its own test conditions; the HouseFresh numbers are the better guide to what a person will hear. Their estimate of 134 CFM below 45 dBA is the number that matters for bedrooms. In a 12 × 15 ft room with 8 ft ceilings (1,440 cubic feet), that is about 5.6 air changes an hour on speed 2, quiet enough for most sleepers.

Efficiency is a genuine strength. Speed 3 delivers a lot of air for 16 W, and even flat out the unit draws under 40 W.

Filters and three-year cost

The standard Core 400S-RF lists at $49.99, and Levoit says to replace it every 6–8 months. The pre-filter is wrapped onto the cylinder, so it can be vacuumed but not washed, and it is thrown out with the filter. The same housing takes three specialty versions: Pet Allergy (Core400S-RF-PA, $59.99), Toxin Absorber (Core400S-RF-TX, $59.99) and a 4-in-1 Smoke Remover (Core400S-RF-SR, $64.99). Fitment and the genuine-vs-compatible trade-off are covered on the Levoit Core 400S Replacement Filter page.

Three-year cost, assuming a $190 street price, a filter every 7 months, and $0.17/kWh running 24/7:

  • Purchase: about $190
  • Filters: 5 replacements × $49.99 = about $250
  • Electricity on speed 2 (8.51 W, about 75 kWh a year): about $38. On speed 3 (16.41 W) it is about $73.
  • Total: about $478 on speed 2, about $513 on speed 3.

Filters are the biggest line after the purchase price. Compatible filters such as FiltersFast's FF-400S at $26.95 nearly halve that line, but their HEPA claims are the seller's own. The filter cost calculator reruns the math with your own prices.

For comparison, the Vital 200S-P works out to about $436 over three years with the same five $49.99 filters and its own measured speed-2 power. Most of that gap is the purchase price, not running cost.

Smart features worth using

The useful parts are the laser PM2.5 sensor driving auto mode, VeSync scheduling (lower speeds overnight, higher while you're out), and Alexa or Google Assistant control. The filter-life countdown in the app is a timer, not a measurement, so treat it as a reminder.

Two owner complaints recur. The VeSync app sometimes drops the connection and needs re-pairing. A minority of owners also report the air-quality reading sitting at its cleanest level even while cooking, which usually calls for cleaning the sensor rather than replacing anything.

Is it the right one for you?

Buy the Core 400S-P for a 250–360 sq ft room when you want app control, a laser-sensor auto mode with no ionizer, and a round purifier that can stand away from walls. It also makes sense if the household already stocks Core 400S filters.

Look elsewhere in these cases:

  • Shedding pets: the Levoit Vital 200S-P is rated slightly higher (250 CFM) and its pre-filter rinses clean.
  • Bedroom under about 220 sq ft: the Core 300S is cheaper to buy and to feed.
  • Open-plan room over about 400 sq ft: the Core 600S, rather than a 400S-P running on its loudest speed.

Pros and cons

What works

  • AHAM Verifide 231 CFM smoke CADR, enough for a 15 × 24 ft living room
  • Efficient: HouseFresh measured 8.51 W on speed 2 and 39.64 W flat out
  • 360° intake on a 10.8 in round base, so it works away from walls
  • No ionizer, unlike the similarly named PlasmaPro 400S
  • Takes the same Core 400S-RF filter as every Core 400S and PlasmaPro 400S

What doesn't

  • Pre-filter is bonded to the $49.99 filter cylinder, so it can only be vacuumed, not washed
  • Levoit's 6–8 month filter guidance makes it roughly $85 a year in filters
  • HouseFresh measured 60.3 dBA on top speed, louder than the Vital 200S-P's 57.7 dBA
  • Usually costs more than the Vital 200S-P while being rated for slightly less airflow

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Levoit Core 400S and Core 400S-P?

The Core 400S-P is the current listing of the same purifier. It has the same 38 W rating, 10.8 × 10.8 × 20.5 in body and Core 400S filter. What changed is the rating: the original manual printed a single 260 CFM CADR and 403 sq ft, while the 400S-P carries AHAM Verifide figures of 231 smoke, 240 dust and 259 pollen CFM and 358 sq ft at 4.8 air changes. Levoit has not documented a hardware change.

Is the Core 400S-P the same as the PlasmaPro 400S?

No. The PlasmaPro 400S (also sold as PlasmaPro 400S-P at some retailers) is the Core 400S body with Levoit's PlasmaPro ionizer added, which releases positive and negative ions. The Core 400S-P has no ionizer. Both take the same replacement filter.

Does the Core 400S filter fit the Core 400S-P?

Yes. Levoit lists its 3-stage Core 400S filter (Core 400S-RF) as fitting the Core 400S, Core 400S-P, PlasmaPro 400S and PlasmaPro 400S-P. The Pet Allergy, Toxin Absorber and Smoke Remover variants fit the same units.

Levoit Core 400S-P or Core 300S?

Go by room size. The Core 300S (141 CFM) suits rooms up to about 219 sq ft, such as a 12 × 18 ft bedroom. The Core 400S-P (231 CFM) covers about 358 sq ft. Anything between those sizes points to the 400S-P.

Is the Core 400S-P loud?

Levoit rates it at 22–52 dB. HouseFresh, measuring the original Core 400S from three feet, recorded 35.5 dBA in sleep mode, 43.2 dBA on speed 2 and 60.3 dBA on top speed. Speed 2 or 3 is the realistic everyday setting in a bedroom.

Levoit Core 400S-P or Core 600S?

Pick the Core 600S if the room is larger than about 360 sq ft or is open-plan; at the site's 4.8 ACH sizing it covers about 606 sq ft. Below that size, the Core 400S-P is cheaper, smaller and draws less power.
