Levoit Core 300S vs Core 600S: Bedroom Unit or Big-Room Unit?

Buy the Levoit Core 300S for one bedroom, nursery or office under about 220 sq ft, and the Levoit Core 600S for a living area between roughly 360 and 600 sq ft. The 600S moves nearly three times the air (391 vs 141 CFM smoke CADR) for about three times the price, so the real question is whether your problem is one big room or several small ones.

The short answer

Choose the Core 300S if you are cleaning a single closed room up to about 220 sq ft, want the purifier on a dresser or desk, and would like the whole thing to cost about $250 over three years including filters.

Choose the Core 600S if the space is open-plan, larger than about 360 sq ft, or has a tall ceiling, or if you want a large bedroom cleaned on a low, quiet fan setting.

If your room falls between 220 and 360 sq ft, neither of these is the natural fit; the Core 400S-P sits in that gap, and the Core 300S vs 400S-P and Core 400S-P vs 600S pages cover each step.

What each one can actually clean

Air changes per hour are CADR times 60, divided by the room's volume. Here is how both units do flat out under 8 ft ceilings, with 4.8 changes an hour as the target:

RoomCore 300SCore 600S
11 x 12 nursery (132 sq ft)8.0 per hour22.2 per hour
12 x 16 bedroom (192 sq ft)5.515.3
14 x 18 primary bedroom (252 sq ft)4.2, short11.6
16 x 22 living room (352 sq ft)3.0, short8.3
20 x 28 open kitchen and lounge (560 sq ft)1.95.2

The 300S stops being enough a little past 220 sq ft. The 600S still clears a 560 sq ft open plan at a proper rate, and in anything under about 250 sq ft it has more capacity than the room can use. A 9 ft ceiling trims the limits to about 195 and 539 sq ft. For awkward shapes or vaulted rooms, plug your own measurements into the room size calculator.

The bedroom case for the bigger unit

Giving that 12 x 16 ft bedroom 4.8 changes an hour takes about 123 CFM. That is 87% of what the 300S can deliver, so it will hover near its top speeds whenever the air is dirty. The same 123 CFM is under a third of the 600S's output, which leaves it on a soft setting.

That is the argument for a 600S in a large bedroom, and it is a fair one if the room is 250 sq ft or more. In a small room it falls apart on price: you pay about $200 extra, and the 600S's quietest setting is rated 2 dB louder than the 300S's floor. For most bedrooms under about 200 sq ft, the small unit wins. The best bedroom purifiers list has more options sized for sleeping spaces.

Three 300S units or one 600S?

This is the comparison most people are really making, because three Core 300S units cost about the same as one Core 600S. On airflow the trio even edges ahead: 423 CFM against 391.

The trio wins when the house is a set of closed rooms, say two bedrooms and an office, where a single purifier in the hall would leave each room under-served. Each 300S gets its own sensor, schedule and sleep mode, all on one VeSync account.

The single 600S wins in one open space and on upkeep. Three small cylinders every six to eight months add up to roughly 15 filters in three years, about $450 at Levoit's $29.99 list. The 600S needs two or, on a faster swap rhythm, five. If two of your three "rooms" are really one open area, buy one 600S for that and one 300S for the bedroom.

Three-year cost

Assumptions: mid-range purchase prices; the first filter ships in the box; the 300S filter is swapped about every 7 months (five replacements in 36 months), as Levoit's 6 to 8 month guidance implies. The 600S row uses the yearly interval in the site's catalog, with a faster-swap scenario below because that interval is not printed on Levoit's filter page.

Over 36 monthsCore 300SCore 600S
Purchase~$100~$300
Filters5 x $29.99 = ~$1502 x $59.99 = ~$120
Total before power~$250~$420
Cost per sq ft of coverage~$1.14~$0.69
Power ceiling (max draw, 24/7, $0.17/kWh)~$36 a year~$73 a year

The electricity line is a worst case: Levoit publishes only maximum draw, and neither unit spends the year on top speed. If the 600S cylinder turns out to need the same 7-month rhythm as the small one, five swaps lift its filter bill to about $300 and its total to roughly $600. Run your own intervals through the filter cost calculator.

Differences beyond airflow

Auto mode on the 600S holds back. Levoit states that the 600S-P's auto mode won't climb to high or turbo speeds, which keeps it quiet but means it never uses its full CADR on its own. During smoke events, set it manually.

Odor upgrades exist for the big unit. Besides the $59.99 Original cylinder, Levoit lists Toxin Absorber and 3-stage versions for the 600S-P at $69.99 and a Smoke Remover at $79.99. If cooking or smoke smells are the real complaint, that is a cheaper fix than a different purifier, though it adds $10 to $20 per swap.

Placement. At 6 lb the 300S moves between rooms with one hand. The 600S, at 13.7 lb, is a stay-put floor unit that wants open space around it.

Dark-room display. Levoit says the 600S-P's light sensor switches off the display lights when the room goes dark, which saves fiddling with buttons at bedtime.

Which one to buy

Count the closed rooms, then measure the biggest one. A single room under about 220 sq ft gets a Core 300S. An open living area of 360 to 600 sq ft gets a Core 600S, with the Levoit Core 600S Replacement Filter as its ongoing cost. A home with both usually wants one of each, run from the same app.

If your main room lands between 220 and 360 sq ft, the Levoit Core 400S-P is the size this pairing skips. And if pet hair is the main complaint, the Levoit Vital 200S-P adds a pre-filter you can rinse, which neither Core cylinder has.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Core 600S replace two Core 300S units in separate bedrooms?

No. Air cleaned by a purifier in the hallway or one bedroom barely reaches a second room with the door closed. One 600S does the work of two 300S units only when both areas are one open space, such as a living room that flows into a dining area.

Does the Core 600S fit in a small bedroom?

It fits, but it is a 13.7 lb floor unit rather than a nightstand cylinder, and it costs about three times as much. In a 12 x 16 ft room it can reach a healthy air-change rate on a gentle setting, which is quiet, but the Core 300S does the same job for about $200 less.

Do the Core 300S and Core 600S use the same app?

Yes. Both run on Levoit's VeSync app, so one account can schedule and monitor both. That makes a mixed setup, a 600S in the living room and a 300S in the bedroom, easy to manage from one screen.

Can I put a Core 300 filter in a Core 600S?

No. The 600S takes its own larger cylinder ($59.99 for the Original filter at Levoit), and the $29.99 Core 300 Series filter fits only the Core 300 family. Buy by the model name printed on the purifier's base.

Why does the Core 600S on auto never go to its top speed?

Levoit says the 600S-P's auto mode deliberately avoids its high and turbo speeds to keep noise down. That is fine day to day, but during wildfire smoke or after a kitchen mishap, switch to a manual high speed to get the full 391 CFM.
